St Notburga was a Tyrolean maid who lived in the 13th century (c. 1265-1313) and is particularly known for her piety, compassion and commitment to the poor. Notburga insisted on giving leftover food to the poor, which she was sometimes forbidden to do by the lords. Legend has it that she put down her work when the church bells called for prayer and that her scythe remained suspended in the air.
She was canonised by Pope Pius IX in 1862. Her memorial day is 13 September. She is considered the patron saint of servants and peasants. Her grave is located in the pilgrimage church in Eben am Achensee.
